The beach paradise of Redang Island

Redang Island is a relatively newly-discovered island paradise, located in the South China Sea off the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Pulau Redang whose name is easily confused with the name of a delicious Malaysian curry, is situated 45 kms north-north east of the city of Kuala Terrenganu. The island is actually one of nine islands that make up the protected enclave of the Redang Marine Park.
Redang Island which is renowned for its many stunning powder-sand beaches and views has in recent years become a favored spot on the beach island tourists’ trail thanks to a Chinese romantic comedy- Summer Holiday that was filmed at various spots around Redang Island in 2000. This film went on to become a runaway hit and brought the island into prominence. The makers of Summer Holiday, in 2011,  then went on to shoot the film’s sequel ‘Love You You’  on Redang island as well, an act that further helped to enhance the island’s popularity
Getting to Redang Island is quite easy. The island is easily accessed by regular ferry rides from the Merang or Shahbandar jetties in Kuala Terengganu. The ferry ride from Merang takes about 45-60 minutes while the ride from Shahbandar jetty takes around 90 minutes. However you can also choose to fly directly to Redang Island via Berjaya air which provides scheduled air connections between Redang and destinations like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Redang is also within easy reach of other popular beach holiday destinations like the Perhentian Islands and Lang Tengah.
The weather over Redang Island is typically hot and humid year round due its location near the equator, though the island does experience a distinct dry and wet season. The rains come to Redang between the months of November and March. During this season, most of the resorts on the island are shuttered and the ferry services to the island are suspended as well. The best season to visit Redang is during its dry season, which usually extends from March to October and is characterized by little rain and calm seas.
Redang Island measures about 7km in length and 6km in width. The island features gorgeous sandy beaches on its eastern coast. Pasir Panjang and Teluk Kalong are the most popular white sand beachfronts of island that host the majority of its many high-end resorts. As Redang Island is part of a Marine Park, fishing or the collecting of corals and shells on and around the island is not permitted.
The area of  Redang Island that borders Pulau Pinang is a favored spot for  snorkeling  and diving on the island  Most resorts located on the island offer snorkeling trips to the Redang Marine Park to their guests. The area of the ocean enclosed by the Marine Park abounds with rich marine life and is home to about 3000 species of fish and 500 species of reef-building coral. This Marine Park area also features a shipwreck that and serves as an added attraction for the many divers and snorkelers who visit Pulau Redang
Even, if you are not much a marine enthusiast, you can find activities to enjoy on the island like taking a stroll to discover the island’s flora and fauna via its many well-defined walking and hiking trails. Or then you can just kick-back and relax at your chosen resort, to perhaps rise early to catch an awe-inspiring sunrise on the island. An event considered to be one of the star attractions on the beach paradise known as Redang Island.
