Buffalo Park Langkawi

The island paradise of Langkawi is renowned for its many pristine beaches, nature reserves and diverse historical sights. However, one particular Langkawi experience has in recent times gained much popularity, and this inimitable attraction definitely warrants a visit on any trip to the ’jewel of Kedah.’ The attraction in question is the agro-tourist spectacle, the Buffalo Park Langkawi.
Nestled in the verdant valley located between the imposing Gunung Raya and Gunung Machicang peaks, the Buffalo Park Langkawi is situated close to the Langkawi International airport and is accessible via a thirty minute drive from the island’s main town of Kuah. This agrarian facility has been in existence since 2006 and the idea of its foundation is attributed to former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who once expressed a desire to establish a modern livestock facility on Langkawi.
Subsequently, various government departments including the state’s Department of Veterinary Services worked together to requisition land from six villagers and the Buffalo Park Langkawi was founded with an initial heard of 60 Murrah buffaloes. Over the years, this facility which focuses mainly on the production of milk, yogurt and organic fertilizers, has grown and developed to presently encompass a herd of more than a hundred Murrah and Swamp buffaloes. Moreover, aside from its production activities, the facility has also grown to become significant attraction on the tourist trail in Langkawi.
Surrounded by lush virgin tropical rain forests, expansive verdant rubber plantations and velvety green paddy fields, the setting of the Buffalo Park Langkawi delights all nature lovers. The park offers a whole host of indoor and outdoor activities suitable for all ages. Outdoor activities at the park include taking photographs with the famed Murah water-buffaloes, going on buffalo and ‘anok’ cart rides and feeding these large bovines (under supervision of course).
Visitors also have the opportunity to view the automated process of milking the buffaloes when they venture indoors. Additionally, they are also invited to try their hand at milking the buffaloes manually. Also on offer are demonstrations that illustrate the process of turning the buffalo milk into dairy products like yogurt, cheese, ice-cream and flavored milk. Samplings of these delicious dairy products are offered to the visitors as well.
The Buffalo Park Langkawi is charming rural attraction suitable for all ages. Moreover, it assumes much importance in an increasingly urbanized world, where people don’t have much of a chance to interact with nature and its many mesmerizing attractions.
