Medical Tourism in Malaysia

Burgeoning health care costs are a major concern in most western economies populated by ageing populations. Folk from these countries have now begun to travel overseas to seek more affordable health care options. The Asian region is especially popular locale for medical tourism and Malaysia is counted as one of the top ranked destinations for medical tourism in Asia.

There are various reasons for this high ranking, the first being health tourism to Malaysia is actively promoted and supported by the Malaysian government. Further, the country has an excellent network of private hospitals which offer a wide range of treatments including alternative treatments like native Chinese and Malay remedies and Ayurvedic treatments. Additionally staffs at these hospitals are very well-qualified, as most have received their education and training at well-known institutions in the UK, USA and Australia and thus are proficient in English as well.
These Malaysian hospitals offer a wide range of traditional medical services like cancer treatments, cardiac surgery and various orthopedic procedures like hip and knee replacements along with infertility treatments, dental surgeries, eye surgeries and more. Also on offer are various aesthetic treatments like cosmetic procedures, weight management therapies and various wellness treatments.

The costs involved for these various treatments and procedures are significantly lower in Malaysia than in the West and this renders the country as an attractive option for medical tourism. For instance, while a heart bypass surgery may cost more than $100,000 in the USA, the same treatment in Malaysia costs about $10,000 to $15000, this represents a significant amount of savings.
Additionally, travel to Malaysia from the West is not prohibitive and the country also has a well-developed and affordable hospitality sector which offers top-notch accommodation options so a patient can easily bring along family for support while undergoing a medical procedure in Malaysia. Moreover after the treatment has been completed, the patient can recuperate at one of the many stunning beach, golf or hill resorts that litter Malaysia’s tourism landscape.

Medical tourism in Malaysia is a booming industry which is set to grow in leaps and bounds in the coming years.
