Penang Bridge International Marathon

It’s that time of the year again when professional and amateur runners from around the world converge on the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, Penang to take part in a unique marathon effort, the Penang Bridge International Marathon.  This hugely popular running event is fixed for Sunday, 17th November this year.

The event, which has been held since 1985 features a route that requires runners to traverse the length of the elongated Penang Bridge, the third longest bridge in the world and the pride and joy of native Penangites. Another unique feature of this marathon is that it is kicks-off in the dead of the night, around 2 am to help marathoners escape the sultry heat of the tropics and enjoy a cool run.

The Penang Bridge International Marathon features a number of events including a full marathon (42.2km), a half marathon (21km), a 10 km run and a 5km fun run. The busy Penang Bridge, which is known to handle 65000 vehicles daily, is closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the marathon. This marathon event typically extends over seven hours.

Participation in the Penang Bridge International Marathon is open to anyone over the age of 13(for this year’s event, participants have to be over the age of 13 as on 31st December 2013) and features professionals and amateurs alike. In fact, this year a record 45000 runners have registered for the event.

The Penang International Bridge Marathon is being organized by the Penang State Tourism Development Committee and, will feature various prizes, trophies and medals for the fastest finishing times.  Additionally, finisher medals, certificates and other prizes will also be handed out to all those who participate in the event.

So if you are a long-distance running champ or are just an enthusiastic novice come on over to Penang for its premier running event, and once you are done running, you can go out and indulge in the many delights of Penang’s famed Gurney Drive.
